Success Story of Laura

Beginning. Why did you want to lose weight? What encouraged you to take action and start changing your lifestyle (to try intermittent fasting)?

I had been steadily gaining weight over the last five years as I began going through menopause. My eating hadn’t changed much (healthy but lots of snacks), and I still exercised 4-5 times a week, doing cardio for 30-45 minutes at a time. During these five years, I tried many different diets, and nothing worked. When I reached 227 pounds in April and saw pictures of myself in my size 18/20 clothes, I started reading up on intermittent fasting. On April 23, 2022, I downloaded the Do Fasting app and continued to read and research IF.

What was your weight goal? 

My first goal is 180 pounds, a weight I had previously maintained for many years before menopause began. I am 8 pounds away from that goal.

What results have you achieved?

I have lost 38 pounds as of today (3 months time). I have gone down two sizes and several inches on all my measurements. I am fasting 18-22 hours most days after beginning with 14:10. I am able to exercise more easily now and do 4-mile walks and 30-45 minute bike rides on my Peloton. My cholesterol levels have gone down 70 points and are no longer at pre-diabetic levels. My blood work has improved, I have a lot more energy and confidence, and I no longer crave salty snacks or sweets between meals.

Which method of intermittent fasting worked the best for you?

I started with a 14:10 plan for a month while my body adjusted to fasting, then switched to 16:8 for about two weeks, and now do 18:6 with some days 20-22 hours of fasting. I have not done any extended fasts yet.

How long did it take to see a difference?

The weight started coming off within the first week. I have been losing 1-4 pounds per week.

What would you like to tell others who are starting their journey?

Be patient. Give your body time to heal. Drink your water and commit to clean fasting. Listen to your body!

Anything interesting about your journey? Perhaps tips and tricks? 

I cut diet pop completely out of my diet and try to drink just plain water and black coffee. I also crave unprocessed foods now, such as fruit and vegetables.

What are your further goals?

Once I reach 180 pounds, I plan to set a new goal of 165-170 pounds. I am hoping to wear a size 10 pants again and think this would be the weight at which I can do this. (I am in size 14 now.) I plan to continue the IF lifestyle forever, maintaining a weight that suits my body type and frame.
